Animal Bioscience Complex
Animal Bioscience Complex
A partnership program of the:
United States Department of Agriculture
Agricultural Research Service
Montana State University
College of Agriculture
Montana Agricultural Experiment Station
The Vision … Expanded
A state-of-the-art Animal Bioscience Complex will allow the growth and expansion of education and research programs that better meet current and future needs of agriculture, in particular, the teaching and research programs from the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. Programs will increase competitiveness and profitability of agriculture, especially the range-livestock industry, and prepare the agriculture community for the 21st century. The Complex will provide opportunities to promote wise multiple-use stewardship of Montana’s natural resources and celebrate Montana’s rich agricultural heritage.
The Project … Evolving ... Moving ... Improved
The $36.5 million Animal Bioscience Complex with consist of two buildings: a USDA-Agricultural Research Service
research building and an MSU teaching facility.
 |
Research Facility …
The $24 million research building funded, built, and staffed by USDA-ARS will be dedicated to work on functional bovine genetics in partnership with the MSU College of Agriculture, USDA-ARS in Miles City and the U.S. Meat Animal Research Facility at Clay Center, NE. The goal is to unlock the genetic information needed and apply this science to enhance the efficient production of safe, consistently high-quality meat products.
UPDATE: Securing federal funding for the USDA-ARS Research Facility is a top priority for Montana’s U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester and Representative Denny Rehberg. The architects contracted for the USDA-ARS Facility have begun collaborating with the architects contracted for the MSU Facility.

Teaching Facility …
The $15.7 million teaching facility will house the Department of Animal and Range Sciences. The outreach capabilities of the facility will ensure that both students and producers are kept abreast of animal and range teaching and research conducted at MSU, including the functional genetics research occurring in the USDA-ARS facility.
UPDATE: The final design documents for the MSU teaching facility have been approved for a nearly 40,000 ft2 building. Work is progressing on the details of each individual room, such as necessary outlets, lighting fixtures, and assorted technologies.
Above and Beyond: The new facility will have a robust, cutting-edge audio/visual infrastructure to allow recording and archiving, or live distribution of lectures, meetings and presentations over the Internet. A number of new technologies and methods are available to provide several media formats to remote locations, even over slow links. This will allow rural Montanans to enjoy and participate in College of Ag educational opportunities. Finally, the building will be interconnected to allow simultaneous viewing of events in some or all of the classrooms. These events can take place on- or off-campus. In addition to high-tech multimedia sharing, the building will contain collaboration space and interactive technology displays. One room is dedicated to technology transfer and will have full videoconferencing capabilities built in. Common areas will have interactive technology available, allowing students, staff and visitors to learn more about the College, Experiment Stations and agriculture-related events in the state.
The Goal … Reachable
Montana’s 60th Legislative Assembly provided $3.57 million for the MSU Animal Bioscience teaching facility. This funding milestone and the strong commitment of the livestock and range industry, the faith of producers across the state and the resulting success of the fundraising campaign has allowed us to expand the vision and improve the project. We are talking about a facility that will launch a new era in animal and range sciences for generations to come. You are a rich part of Montana’s ranching heritage. Please consider stepping up to be part of an elite group of leaders who have made this investment OR consider enhancing your generosity by adding to your commitment.
The Opportunity … Still Here … Sprinting to the Goal
You can still be a part of this visionary project by donating or pledging money to the MSU Animal Bioscience teaching facility. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to have your family, ranch, or business permanently recognized in this new building.
Naming Opportunities: Many naming opportunities still exist in the building that would allow you to impart a legacy in the building.

Ranchers Circle: The Ranchers Circle recognizes ranches, businesses or individuals that
commit $10,000 or more to the teaching facility. Ranchers Circle members receive a gold lapel
pin and are publicly recognized in various ways by the College of Agriculture. There are
currently 136 members of the Ranchers Circle.
The Ranchers Circle members are listed on a separate page.
Ranchers Circle Recognition: All members of the Ranchers
Circle will be permanently recognized in a unique way in the building. Brands,
logos or other identifying graphics will be integrated into an etched or frosted Montana
agricultural and natural resource landscape over several windows in central areas of the
building. An interactive key to the brands and logos will allow visitors to see,
hear, and experience the ranching family or business that was so integral to the existence
of the building and helped define agriculture in Montana for current and future generations.
